Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I have been doing photography since I was a teenager. My photography business, formerly Studio Bleu was located within Out Of The Bleu in Foothill Ranch, CA. I helped start the store and ran it for nearly a year while balancing my busy photography studio. My partnership interest in that business was dissolved in January. I am now able to be engaged in Photography full time without the added responsibilities of the day to day operations and management of a Retail establishment.
What is your primary product or service?
I specialize in Creative Lifestyle Portraiture. What exactly is that, you ask? I take a creative approach to capturing my subjects and try to reflect their individual personalities in my work. This can be hard especially with children, who may be apprehensive about being photographed. I take time to get to know my clients and help them feel comfortable with me. This way they feel free to be themselves, have fun and I am then able to capture them with success. My background in early childhood education helps as does the fact that I am a mom to 4 boys ages 17,12,5 and 4. My 5 year old has special needs and I am especially fond of photographing children who may need a little extra care.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I became interested in photography at a very young age. I was very interested in looking at old photographs as a little girl and shared hours with my grandmother and great grandmother as a past time pouring over family albums from the past. I then got a camera at age 8 and it has been a learning experience from there! I worked in a Studio while in high school and was trained on a medium format camera in all aspects of family and wedding portraiture. I have slowly upgraded my equipment through the years and switched to all digital in 1998. I now use a Canon EOS 5D with a host of lenses and love enhancing my work in Photoshop.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I am a very creative spirit. I try to pay attention to detail and love to watch my subjects for little expressions to capture on film. I am not fond of the traditional stiff poses and cheesy props. I love to use the world as my backdrop, shoot in natural lighting, go into peoples homes and photograph people "living life". I take a fresh, fun approach and always have a great time working with my clients! It works!
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
I have recently started a mentoring program and have 5 assistants who are learning to cultivate their own style in the photography industry. I often bring along an assistant so they can work along side me and we together capture totally different expressions and images. It makes things fun and interesting!
Provide detailed directions to your location
I currently work on location and may open a studio in 2009. Location is still to be determined! I love the freedom and flexibility of on-location work so I will have to think about opening and operating another studio.
What type of payments do you accept?
I accept cash, checks and charge through PayPal.
Which areas do you service?
I travel all over the USA and will go out of the country if travel expenses are paid. I am located in the Southern California section of Orange County. I live in Rancho Santa Margarita.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I am the sole owner of my company and do have an assistant who helps with scheduling. I also have photographers in training to accompany me on photo assignments.
What are your hours of operation?
24 hrs a day 365 days a year!
I also do "First Moments" photography - Childbirth and First Minutes of Life - this can happen any time day or night!
