Since 1956, thousands of children have received the quality instruction that has become the Blue Buoy trademark. We are proud of our increasing number of 2nd and 3rd generation students. Frightened beginners, experienced swimmers, infants through adults, can all learn at Blue Buoy.
Open year-round, our teaching pools are kept a comfortable 93 degrees. Lessons are scheduled days and evenings, Monday - Saturday. Semi-private (2/class), Private, Parent & Me, Stroke Technique, Club Prep, Adult classes & Open Swim are available. All classes are fun, effective and individually paced. Our exceptional teaching methods, customized facilities, and positive reinforcement will help you succeed at Blue Buoy.
We were proud to have former students represent the United States in the 1984, 1996, 2000 & 2004 Olympics, but no matter what your goals are, we will help you develop to your fullest potential.

How long have you been in business?
Established in 1956. For over 50 years our mission has been not only to develop safer swimmers but to instill a love of the water in each of our students, and we believe in the school motto of ‘great beginnings lead to great finishes. It is so exciting to look back on our five decades in this business and realize that we’re now teaching second and sometimes third generations of children how to swim. That’s a tremendous confirmation of what we’ve been trying to accomplish.
What is your primary product or service?
Small classes make it possible for us to work with each child at the pace that makes sense for them. Blue Buoy offers Semi-private (2/class), Private, Parent & Me, Stroke Prep, Stroke Technique, & Adult classes. We also offer Open Swim year round and Swim Meets from May through August.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Johnny Johnson is a founding member of the board of directors for the National Drowning Prevention Alliance and a charter member and past president of the U.S. Swim School Association (USSSA). He is also a former co-chair of the USSSA Infant-Toddler Committee and co-author of the USSSA Infant-Toddler Certification Course that has been taken by thousands of instructors worldwide. Blue Buoy Swim School’s community longevity and instructional excellence has been recognized at the national level, as the school’s original owners, Mel and Doris Maxwell, were inducted into the USSSA Hall of Fame. Johnson has continued that legacy with his induction in October 2004.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
The oldest family-run swim school in the county and Tustin Chamber of Commerce’s 2005 Small Business of the Year, Blue Buoy’s more than 200,000 students have learned how to stay safer in the pool, perfected swimming technique, and for some, have gone on to compete in the Olympic Games. Since 1956, Blue Buoy Swim School has provided the highest quality swimming instruction to generations of Orange County families. Its commitment to excellence in instruction, service to customers and community as well as employee relations is the reason why Blue Buoy is one of the oldest and most successful schools in the United States. Blue Buoy is also known internationally through participation in the U.S. Swim School Association, and Blue Buoy teaching methods have been adopted by schools throughout the United States and other countries.

We have one location with indoor and outdoor pools, both kept at a bathtub-warm 93 degrees.

Blue Buoy Swim School is located at: 1702 Nisson Road, Tustin, CA 92780. From the 5 fwy, take the Red Hill off-ramp south and get into the left lane asap. Turn left onto Nisson Rd between the Taco Bell & Chevron station. (It's a frontage road along the south side of the 5 fwy.) You'll pass a car wash on your left and the Westchester Park apartments on your right. Go slowly and you'll see Blue Buoy's parking lot on the right as soon as you pass the apartments.
